Recipe || Brown Butter and Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies

I post a lot of flavourful dessert recipes, but there’s nothing really better than a good chocolate chip cookie is there? Close your eyes and think: what’s the one treat you’d pick if you could only have one sweet thing forever? Mine would be warm chocolate chip cookies.

I don’t think I’ll ever grow out of thinking that a glass of milk is the most delicious beverage to accompany a chocolate chip cookie!

I ate about 5 of these cookies in one sitting.

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups of flour
1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of sea salt, plus more for sprinkling
1 cup of butter
1 1/2 cups of packed brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg, and 1 egg yolk
2 teaspoons of vanilla
1 tablespoon of cream cheese
1 1/2 cups of chocolate chips

Instructions:

Whisk together flour, baking soda and salt and set aside. In a small pan melt the butter over medium heat. Stir the butter constantly until it starts to brown. It should start to smell slightly nutty.  Remove it from the heat as soon as that occurs. Let the butter cool for a few minutes.

dough
You wouldn’t think it, but the browned butter really made a flavour difference.
More rich, with a hint of maple syrup!

Mix the sugars into the butter until everything is thoroughly combined. Then mix in the egg, cream cheese and vanilla.

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Beat until just combined and then fold in all the chocolate chips. Refrigerate the dough for 2 hours.

Salt helps bring out the flavour of chocolate so feel free to press a little sea salt on top!

Preheat your oven to 350 F.  Grease your cookie sheet. Roll 1/4 cup of dough into a ball. Repeat until all the dough is used. Place the cookies 2” apart on the cookie sheet. Flatten them slightly and sprinkle with sea salt. Bake for 9-11 minutes. The cookies should be golden brown on the edges but a bit underdone in the middle. When you remove them from the oven, let the cookies sit on the cookie sheet for at least 10 minutes and the middles will continue to cool. Them move them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Then, the best step- eat!

yum! cookie
These were baked to my favourite consistency, soft in the middle while still crunchy on the edges.
Warm or cold, I don’t really care as long as I can eat them!

How do you like your chocolate chip cookies? Soft? Warm? Chewy? Crunchy?
